You need not read Dale Carnegie's classic business handbook How to Win Friends and Influence People, to know that mastering the "fine art of getting along with others" is critical to success in business, as well as in life.

A common denominator among great leaders is their ability to respond appropriately to people of different backgrounds so that they can negotiate differences in expectations and agendas to achieve mutually beneficial outcomes; however, among well-educated professionals in today's business world this skill is hard to find.

Although professionals are investing in soft skills training, underdeveloped interpersonal skills and lack of understanding about workplace politics continue to not only impede associates' advancement but cost firms valuable clients and revenues, as well.

Discerning clients expect more than excellence in the specific professional services sought - legal, accounting, engineering, IT, or consulting; they have expectations for image, communications, and presentation that are industry-specific and held to unusually high standards. Unfortunately, many professionals discover too late that their CPE-/MCLE- technically oriented training was not beneficial to their career.

In fact, industry-specific expectations for every facet of a relationship between clients and professional firms requires specialized knowledge of communications standards, sales and presentation skills (formal and informal), correspondence (email, letter, and telephone), attire, socializing, and networking. When partners turn work over to well-intentioned but inappropriately trained associates, firms lose those clients' loyalty.

Inadequate professional training also costs firms in terms of time lost to resolving personnel issues. Workplace culture has distinct characteristics between different industries and among firms within a given industry. When associates do not know how to adapt to firms' inter-departmental workings, firms experience losses in efficiency, focus, and inter-departmental collaboration. Productivity losses also occur as a result of high turnover of employees frustrated or discouraged by their apparent inability to fit in or contribute to the firm.

To maximize ROI, firms are seeking training programs that do more than fulfill CPE/MCLE requirements. To keep clients and personnel on board, they are counting on training and development that addresses industry-specific professional practices and behaviors. When asked about the growing demand for her services, CPA-turned-trainer Virginia Lorimor of WIN Opportunities replied, "I know the personal and professional costs of bouncing from firm to firm while learning to climb the ladder the hard way because I was there." When looking for cost-effective soft-skills training, Lorimor finds that firms are placing a premium on insider knowledge.

Most professional firms readily acknowledge that compared to losing long-term clients and potentially valuable employees, investing in either in-house or outsourced training and development is a small investment.
